Between 2008 and 2013 the Royal Austalian Mint produced a series of one dollar coins that commemorated the contributions made bya number of Inspiraitonal Australians. This piece celebrates the life of Saint Mary MacKillop. The reverse was designed by Vladimir Gottwald and features MacKillop and three young children infront of a map of the world. The legend states "INSPIRATIONAL AUSTRALIANS EDUCATION" and "MARY MACKILLOP 1842 - 1909". The obverse features the standard Ian Rank-Brodaley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. After initially working as a teacher she became increasingly focused on establishing a life for herself within the church. Under the guidance of Father Julian Tenison-Woods, MacKillop became the superior and first member of 'The Sisters of St Joseph and the Sacred Heart'. The society focused itself on educating poor children and gained papal approval in 1873. MacKillop established schools throughout Australia before dying in 1909. In October 2010 she was canonised as Saint Mary of the Cross by Pope Benedict XVI. (Osmund Thorpe, 1974)
