William Dobell was born in Newcastle in 1899. In 1916 he was apprenticed as an architect and in 1924 he moved to Sydney where he began work as a draughtsman. While working he undertook art classes at the Julian Ashton School where his artistic talent was recognised and he began receiving awards. This allowed him to travel to London where he attended the University Collage London's famous Slade School of Art. 1943 he won the Archibald Prize however his win was challenged in court as it was argued that his work was not a portrait but a caricature. He won the case and in 1948 he again won the Archibald Prize with a portrait of Margaret Olley. In 1957 Dobell was diagnosed with carcinoma of the colon and was successfully operated on by Dr Edward MacMahon who he painted. This portrait would once again win the Archibald Price in 1959.
