In 2007 Australia hosted a number of important political meetings as part of the the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC). To commemorate this event the Royal Australian Mint produced this circulated one dollar piece. The reverse was designed by Wojciech Pietranik and includes the APEC Australia logo along with the legend "APEC AUSTRALIA 2007 ONE DOLLAR". The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2007".

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a community of 21 economies located around the Asia-Pacific that cooperates to promote free trade. The 2007 meeting of member leaders occurred in cities across Australia all states. The event received substantial media attention and was protested by anti-globalisation demonstrators. Australian TV comedy series 'The Chaser's War on Everything' drew substantial attention away from the official proceedings when they used a fake motorcade to breach the APEC security zone. Police only recognised this intrusion when one of the hoaxers exited their vehicle dressed as Osama bin Laden. This hoax raised substantial concerns about the security surrounding the event, particularly as the motorcade had successfully reached the hotel where U.S. President George W. Bush was staying.
