The commemoration of 150 years of state government in Tasmania is celebrated by the release of this coin. It was struck in sterling silver in 2006. It was released as part of a set containing a total of six coins. The other coins included in the 150 years of state government commemorative set are New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. The reverse of this coin was designed by Wojciech Pietranik and shows an impression of a shape of the state of Tasmania with its name continuously written in block capitals inside it. The design also shows an outline of Australia and determines the location of New South Wales within it. The legend 150 YEARS OF STATE GOVERNMENT 5 DOLLARS is included in the design. The obverse was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and contains a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned, right facing with earrings. It also has the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2006.

On the 22nd May 1856, a significant landmark in Australian history took place. The newly elected, Tasmanian State Parliament sat for the first time. Now, 150 years later, Tasmania celebrates its sesquicentenary of responsible government. Since its inception, the Government has evolved into the 21st century with some alterations and enhancements. The main ones being the setting up of a secret ballot and the right of ALL men to vote. This may seem trivial but this alone put Australia ahead of its time regarding democratic development. Women were given the right to vote back in 1902, even though they could not be democratically elected until 1918.Hobart, the capital of Tasmania since 1825, was named after Lord Robert Hobart who was a British statesman. Tasmania became a Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 and has contributed to the early economy for its industrial wealth. It is governed within the guidelines of the United Kingdoms Westminster System. Legislative power rests with Parliament and the Executive power rests with the Premier of Tasmania and the cabinet. Judicial power comes from the Supreme Court of Tasmania and a number of lower ranked courts.
