The 18th Commonwealth Games took place in Melbourne between the 15th and 26th March 2006. The City of Sport five dollar coin was struck in sterling silver to commemorate the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. The reverse of the coin, designed by Wojciech Pietranik has an intricate design with a backdrop of the Melbourne City skyline. There is an artists impression of an athlete in motion and this is all reflected in contrast below a waterline. Included in the design is the official Melbourne Commonwealth Games logo and at the top of the design is the legend "XVIII COMMONWEALTH GAMES". The obverse features the traditional Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned, facing right, with earrings and is surrounded by the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2006 5 DOLLARS".

Melbourne can boast to be a City of Sport as it really has embraced the concept.
