The 18th Commonwealth Games took place in Melbourne between the 15th and 26th March 2006. The Melbourne Games five dollar coin was struck in copper to commemorate the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. The reverse of the coin, designed by Wojciech Pietranik has an intricate design showing the official logo of the Commonwealth Games with each of the two figures encircling the inner emblem. The inner emblem is ringed with the legend "XVIII COMMONWEALTH GAMES COMMONWEALTH NATIONS". In the centre is the royal emblem of the commonwealth with the legend "MELBOURNE 2006 inscribed underneath. The obverse features the traditional Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned, facing right, with earrings and is surrounded by the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2006.

The Melbourne Commonwealth Games was a great success, not just for Melbourne, but for the Australian nation. It gave a platform for its athletes to show their full potential with friends and family close to hand. They didn't disappoint either! Australia won the games with an amazing 222 medals which included 88 gold's. Their nearest rival was England who had amassed a total of 110 medals of which 36 were gold (Wikipedia, 2013) .

The opening and closing ceremonies took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and it also hosted the start and finish of the marathon. The badminton, boxing and weightlifting took place at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The Melbourne Gun Club was the venue for the Clay Target Shooting whilst the Melbourne International Shooting Club was the venue for the Small Bore and Pistol Shooting. The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre hosted the Aquatics, Squash and Table Tennis events. Melbourne Park was the venue for the Basketball Finals, Track Cycling and the Netball Finals. The Rod Laver Arena at Melbourne Park hosted the Gymnastics events. The Royal Botanic Gardens Circuit was the venue for the Cycling Road Race events and is approximately 2.5 km south-east of the city centre. St Kilda Foreshore and Beach Road was the venue for the Triathlon and Cycling Time Trial whilst the State Mountain Bike Course at Lysterfield Park was the venue for Mountain Biking. The famous Telstra Dome was used for the Rugby 7's. Other venues included the The State Netball and Hockey Centre and The State Lawn Bowls Centre (Melbourne 2006, 2013) .
