The Royal Visit 2006
Over 50 royal excursions have transpired since 1867 with former Prime Minister Robert Menzies characterising Her Majesty the Queen's excursions of the uppermost significance. Most would agree that he accurately denoted the multitude of Australian people's perceptions during a heightened period of acclaimed recognition within the British monarchy. One would assume that this was one of the greatest contributing factors that consistently propelled future excursions of Her Majesty the Queen. The first Royal to visit Australia in 2006 was Prince Edward. He arrived one day prior to Her Majesty The Queen and attended many events as well as visiting the areas recently affected by devastating forest fires in Victoria. He also announced the winner of the recent contest for the Commonwealth Writes Award. Her Majesty The Queen arrived on the 12th March along with Prince Philip and opened the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne (Australian Government, 2007). They also attended many functions, events and ceremonies whilst visiting Canberra and Sydney during their five days. A special dinner was laid on at Parliament House, Canberra to commemorate her 80th birthday where she also gave a formal speech. In spite of her age, Her Majesty The Queen always looked forward to her visits to Australia and meeting its people. She also attended some of the Commonwealth Games during her stay which delighted competitors and spectators alike.
During a ceremonial opening and welcome in Sydney at the Opera House Forecourt, Her Majesty The Queen received a 21 gun salute. After she inspected the guard she was later accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh and she hosted a ceremonial event where she was elected to open the new Western Colonnade of the Sydney Opera House. A commonwealth day of observance which was being debuted as its initial occasion of being held outside of London was also attended by Her Majesty The Queen of Australia. The Duke of Edinburgh also graced the occasion with his presence while in accompaniment of Her Majesty The Queen. The location of the event was St. Andrew's Cathedral (Status Quo, 2014).
