The Great Barrier Reef piece was released in 2006 as part of the Perth mint's Discover Australia - Landmark series. The series celebrated some of Australia's most iconic landmarks. The reverse of this particular coin depicts a turtle in a reef with the legend 'DISCOVER AUSTRALIA - 2006 - Great Barrier Reef 1 OZ 999 SILVER.' The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend 'ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA - 1 DOLLAR.'
