The Sydney Opera House piece was released by the Perth Mint in 2006. The reverse features a side view depiction of the Opera House with the legend '2006 SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE - 1/25OZ 9999 GOLD.' The obverse houses the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the legend 'ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA - 5 DOLLARS.'

The need for a major performing arts centre in Sydney became a major issue in the 1950s. The site was chosen in 1955 and an international competition was started to search for the final design. The design of Danish architect Jørn Utzon was chosen and construction. The project quickly fell behind its schedule due to the enormous engineering challenges the design posed. Utzon left Australia midway through construction and would never return to the see the building completed. The finished building was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1973 to acclaim. The Sydney Opera House has since become one of the worlds most iconic buildings and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
