The Royal Australian Navy reached the landmark of 90 years of service in 2001 and this is reflected by the Royal Australian Mint releasing this commemorative non-circulation one dollar in celebration. The reverse was designed by Vladimir Gottwald and features the RAN insignia incorporating an anchor, along with the legend ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY - ONE DOLLAR. It also shows the dates 1911- 2001 determining the 90 years. The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right and crowned. It also contains the legend ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA 2001.

The RAN has a great history over the 90 years which commenced with a baptism of fire with the onset of World War I. At the time, the Navy Fleet was just three years old with just 3800 personnel which included some 850 from the British Royal Navy. They had to cope with diverse events, which they did admirably, which set the foundation for a great number of years to come. They had to deal with German forces and controlled islands in the Pacific Ocean as well as an attack on Sydney Harbour itself from Japanese midget submarines. The Royal Australian Navy certainly had a lot to cope with, especially with such a young team. The roll of battle honours since it's inception is long indeed.

The following are a list of known battles and campaigns during the past years. New Zealand 1860-61,Rabaul 1914, Dardanelles 1915, North Sea 1915-18, China 1900-01, Emden 1914, German East Africa 1915-16, Indian Ocean 1917, Adriatic 1917-18, Atlantic 1939-43, Calabria 1940, Spada 1940, Libya 1940-41, East Indies 1940-44, Mediterranean 1940-43, Bismarck 1941, Crete 1941, Greece 1941, Kormoran 1941, Matapan 1941, Malta Convoys 1941-42, Indian Ocean 1941-45, Pacific 1941-45, Coral Sea 1942, English Channel 1942, Guadalcanal 1942, Savo Island 1942, Sunda Strait 1942, Darwin 1942-43, New Guinea 1942-44, Sicily 1943, Leyte Gulf 1944, Sabang 1944, Burma 1944-45, Borneo 1945, Japan 1945, Lingaven Gulf 1945, Okinawa 1945, Korea 1950-53, Malaya 1955-60, Malaysia 1964-66, Vietnam 1965-72, Kuwait 1991, East Timor 1999-2000 and Persian Gulf 2001-03.

The Heritage Centre houses a complete history of the Royal Australian Navy throughout its 90 years of service to its country.
