The Australian Army was founded in 1901 just after Federation in a bid to unite the various colonial forces across the land. The Army is one of the oldest institutions in the country but is also considered to be trustworthy and compassionate. The role of the army over the years has evolved into the army of the 21st century. Indeed, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, in 2006, produced the "I'm an Australian Soldier" campaign. This campaign reflects the role of the soldier and gives nine commendable core attributes of the Australian soldier. In its early years, the Australian Army made decisions that would put it in good stead with its people. They were advised by Lord Kitchener to open a Military College that its cadets would pay for themselves. This was firmly rejected by the Military Board as it thought this would seen as an elitist college and that only wealthy officers would be forthcoming. It was also considered that less well off recruits would serve longer terms. In stark contrast to the army of today, the 1903 Defence Act also called for its personnel to be substantially of European descent or origin. The Royal Military College opened in 1911 and was limited to natural-born British subjects (Army, 2014) .
