The Victoria Cross is the highest military honour bestowable and is awarded for acts of bravery during wartime. The Royal Australian mint decided to commemorate the 100 years since the first Australian was awarded the Victoria Cross and issue this one dollar. The reverse was designed by Wojciech Pietranik and shows the Victoria Cross with the inscritpion " FOR VALOUR " and the legend VICTORIA CROSS ONE DOLLAR.

The Victoria Cross was originally created by the late Queen Victoria back in 1856 but it was decided to award it posthumously to cover the Crimean War in 1854. The first Victoria Cross awarded to an Australian was Captain Neville Howse of the New South Wales Medical Staff Corps. He served during World War I and became the Commonwealth Minister for Health, Defence and Repatriation. Since then some 96 Victoria Crosses have been awarded to Australians. The Victoria Cross itself is designed in the form of the Maltese Cross. The centre of the medal is a lion guardant standing upon the Royal Crown and the cross is suspended from a bar by a crimson ribbon. The recipient's details are also present and give their name, rank and unit.
