In 2000 the Royal Australian mint issued three commemorative dollar coins, one commemorating the HMAS Sydney II, another the centenary since the Victoria Cross was first issued to an Australian, and one, of course, to commemorate the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney. There was also an Olympic bronze five dollar coin set comprising of 28 different Olympic events and an Olympic Silver 5 dollar set comprising of 16 coins. The reverse features the Opera house against the Sydney waters with the Olympic logo in between and the numeral 1 on the left with the legend XXVII OLYMPIAD. The obverse features the Rank Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The legend reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2000.

The Sydney Olympics are officially referred to as the Games of the XXVII Olympiad. The event took place at various venues around Sydney with the opening ceremony being held at the Stadium Australia within the Sydney Olympic Park. The event was officially opened on the 15th September and closed on the 1st October. There were three official mascots chosen to represent the games. These were Olly the Kookaburra, Syd the Platypus and Millie the Echidna. The original Olympic Games took place about 3,500 years ago but they didn't last. It was originally held during a religious festival honouring the Greek god Zeus. The Games were abolished in 393 A.D. by the Roman Emporer, Theodosius I, as he tried to suppress paganism. They restarted 1896 and were held in Athens, Greece. It was a great success. The International Olympic Committee had been formed two years earlier. The resurrection was an inspiration from Baron Pierre de Coubertin back in 1887. To be held every four years, as per Ancient Games, the Olympic Games became a great success. The first one to be held in Australia took place in Melbourne, 1956 (Sydney Olympic Games, 2010) . In 1993, Sydney was awarded the opportunity to host the 2000 Olympic Games. This was a chance for Australia to shine. And shine it did. The Sydney games broke so many records including ticket sales, attendances, transport, catering and most importantly, they finished fourth in the medal tables.
