The Majestic Images 1999 Subscription Series One Dollar coin features the three past portraits of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse was designed by Horst Hahne and shows the three portraits. The talented Mary Gillick showing the earliest portrait, Arnold Machin's is in the centre and the Raphael Maklouf to the far right. These are shown within an inner circle with the denomination ONE DOLLAR below. The obverse features the new Ian-Rank Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, right-facing and crowned. It has the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1999.

The British Royal Mint has produced five official effigies of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with four of these having featured on Australian coins. The first was designed by Mary Gillick and featured only on Australian pre-decimal coinage. The second was designed by Arnold Machin and was approved by the Royal Mint in 1964. The Machin portrait was the first to feature on Australian decimal coinage when it was introduced in 1966. The third portrait was completed by Raphael Maklouf and was used on Australian decimal coinage from 1985. The fourth portrait was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and has appeared on Australian coinage since 1996. In 2000 a portrait design completed of RAM designer Vladimir Gottwald was used once on the reverse of a piece issued to commemorate the Royal Visit. In March 2015 the Royal Mint in Britain unveiled a new portrait of Her Majesty designed by Jody Clark. This design has not yet been introduced onto Australian coinage and there is no requirement for it to be used beyond maintaining convention.
