The 1999 general release one dollar commemorated the International Year of Older Persons. The reverse features the Older Persons' logo with the text "Australia 1999 - 1 DOLLAR" in the inner circle with the legend "Towards a society for all ages - International Year of Older Persons". The obverse features the new Ian-Rank Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the standard legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1999".

The International Year of Older Persons was decried by the United Nations General Assembly. It was intended that the year promote the principles of independence, participation, care, self-fulfilment, and dignity for all older persons. (United Nations, 1999)
