From 1993 a number of Olympic Centenary pieces were issued in several nations until 1996 in commemoration of 100 years
of the modern Olympic Games. The Australian issues included two one ounce silver coins and this Two Hundred dollar gold coin.

The Olympic Games first took place about 3500 years ago during a religious festival to honour the Greek God Zeus. The games were abolished in 393 CE by the Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, in an attempt to suppress what he believed were paganist traditions. Over the 19th century a number of smaller sporting events in Greece were named after the Ancient Olympic Games. The French Historian Pierre de Coubertin began to champion the idea of an inclusive multi-national multi-sport sporting event. With Coubertin's guidance and monetary support from Greek patriots the 1896 Summer Olympics took place in Athens with the the extraordinary marble Panathenaic Stadium serving as the main stadium. The games became a huge success and were to be held every four years, as per the Ancient Games.
