The 1993 Olympic Games issues were produced in several nations up until 1996 in commemoration of 100 years of the modern Olympic Games. The Australian issues included two one ounce silver coins and a $200 gold coin. These were sold individually, in two coin sets and in a complete three coin set. This particular coin celebrated 100 years of friendship within the Olympics which brought together athletes from around the globe. It was struck in silver and the reverse was designed by Margaret Priest. It showed the artists impression of team spirit with four men celebrating a win in a pool event. It also contains the five Olympic rings along with the centenary dates of 1896-1996. The obverse shows the traditional Raphael Maklouf portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She appears crowned with necklace, earrings and facing right. It also contains the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1993 20 DOLLARS.

The original Olympic Games took place about 3,500 years ago but they didn't last. It was originally held during a religious festival honouring the Greek god Zeus. The Games were abolished in 393 A.D. by the Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, as he tried to suppress paganism.They restarted 1896 and were held in Athens, Greece. It was a great success. The International Olympic Committee had been formed two years earlier. The resurrection was an inspiration from Baron Pierre de Coubertin back in 1887. To be held every four years, as per Ancient Games, the Olympic Games became a great success. The first one to be held in Australia took place in Melbourne, 1956 (Sydney 2000, 2013) .
