Princess Anne, the only daughter and second child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh is honoured in this commemorative Australian coin. She is now known not as Princess Anne, but as Princess Royal, a title that can only be awarded to the eldest daughter of the sovereign. Similarly to most of the immediate family of Queen Elizabeth II, Anne, Princess Royal has been in the public eye a huge amount and is known for her non-stop charity work. She is currently the patron of over 200 charitable organisations, each of which she dedicates a fair amount of time too. Anne Princess Royal, was born Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise in August 1950. She is the younger sister of Prince Charles and older sister to Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. At the time of her Mothers accession to the throne, Anne, Princess Royal was second in the line of succession behind Prince Charles. After the birth of her younger brothers and then a number of nieces and nephews, she is now tenth in line. Her achievements in the world of sports make her stand out in amongst the Royal Family as she was the first ever to complete in the Olympic Games in Equestrianism and won medals at the European Eventing Championships.

This twenty-five Dollar Silver proof coin is part of a set known as 1992 Masterpieces in Silver: Royal Ladies. It was released by the Royal Australian Mint in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the reign of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. It was one set from the popular Masterpieces in Silver Collection and remains to date to be one of the fasting selling and well-loved Australian commemorative coin issues. The set was very fast to sell out as it caught the eye of both collectors and non-collectors a-like and remains today to be a sought after and valuable set. This particular coin pays tribute to Princess Anne, and was joined in the set by an additional three twenty-five dollar coins as well as a medallion. The coins honour the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and Lady Diana. The medallion, which is the centre piece to the collection bears the image of the Queen sitting on her throne.

The reverse of this coin honouring the Princess Anne, unsurprisingly bears the profile portrait of Princess Anne herself and was designed by Stuart Devlin. Surrounding the image in an upright oval shape is the legend ELIZABETH II 4OTH ANNIVERSARY 25 DOLLARS. Surrounding this and filling the remainder of the coin up to the edge is a border created from overlapping crowns. The obverse bears the Raphael Maklouf portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth II with the surrounding legend that reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1992. The Royal Ladies set was issued in a beautiful burgundy presentation case, plush with velvet and came with a Certificate of Authenticity and an information booklet pertaining to the Royal Ladies to whom this set pays tribute. The main text on the outside of the box reads The Royal Ladies in very large and fancy writing. One pattern in gold of a slightly smaller size (18mm) is known bearing the portrait of Lady Diana.

Princess Anne has been married twice after her first marriage to Mark Phillips ended in divorce after some 19 years of marriage. When they married in 1973 Mark Phillips was a captain in the 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards of Westminster Abbey. The ceremony that was televised is thought to have been seen by over 100 million viewers. The couple went on to have two children Peter Phillips and Zara Phillips before announcing their separation and divorcing in 1992. The second and current marriage of the Princess Royal is to Timothy Lawrence, a Commander in the Royal Navy. In 1974 Princess Anne and Mark Phillips were victims of a Kidnapping attempt. On returning home from a charity event their car was forced to stop and a man began firing shots towards the car. A number of people got shot and injured in the course of the event, whilst attempting to disarm the man and keep the Princess out of danger. The shooter, Ian Ball speaking directly to Anne told her he was taking her hostage and demanding a ransom of between 2 and 3 million. Finally the police were able to intersect and Ball was chased down and arrested. Princess Anne has been heavily involved with royal duties ever since leaving school and her hundreds of public engagements every year consume a significant amount of her time. Her work with some 200 charities take her all over the world in an attempt to help various groups of people including the poverty stricken in Africa.
