The Year of the Rat one thousand dollar gold coin was issued by the Royal Mint to commemorate the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The reverse of this coin, designed by Elizabeth Haddon-Care, has a rat in the centre of the coin, with the legend HONG KONG $1000. The design also incorporates the Chinese symbol of the Year of the Rat. The obverse features the Arnold Machin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned and right facing and is surrounded by the legend QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND 1984. There was also a gold proof coin struck in the same year.

This 1984 Year of the Rat coin is the 13th year of the lunar series. The Year of the Rat is part of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is used for festive occasions including the Chinese New Year, which falls between late January and early February. The twelve animal signs derive from Chinese folklore as a method for naming the years. The animals follow one another in an established order and are repeated every twelve years. The Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Each animal has unique characteristics and people born in that particular year are believed to take on these characteristics. The Year of the Rat was last celebrated in 2008. Rat people are ambitious, charming, talkative and easily make friends. Even though they are talkative, they are also very private about their own personal life and are devoted and faithful to close friends. They are adaptive, flexible, clever and good at problem solving which enables them to cope with most difficulties. They are generally successful at whatever they do, but they can be gullible which can lead them into danger. With regards to money Rat people are considered the meanest animal in the Chinese zodiac.
