The Year of the Pig one thousand dollar gold coin was struck in 1983. The reverse of this coin, designed by Elizabeth Haddon-Care, has a pig in the centre of the coin with the legend HONG KONG $1000. The design also incorporates the Chinese symbol of the Year of the Pig. The obverse features the Arnold Machin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, crowned and right facing and is surrounded by the legend QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND 1983.

This 1983 pig coin is the 12th year of the lunar series. The Year of the Pig is part of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is used for festive occasions including the Chinese New Year, which falls between late January and early February. The twelve animal signs derive from Chinese folklore as a method for naming the years. The animals follow one another in an established order and are repeated every twelve years. The Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each animal has unique characteristics and people born in that particular year are believed to take on these characteristics. The Year of the Pig dictates that your characteristics would include honesty, sincerity and that you are genuine. You would have a heart of gold and everyone would admire you. You would be called upon when sincere advice is needed and would always give a helping hand. Pig people are the best friend anyone can have. They are also fun-loving and know how to throw a good party, but if rubbed up the wrong way they can be extremely vengeful. They can also be naive which allows others to take advantage of them. They have a great thirst for knowledge and although they do not always say much when they do decide to speak nothing can stop them. Pig Years: 1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031
