The 1982 Chinese Year of the Dog, one thousand dollar gold coin is the 7th coin in this series. The reverse features an Elizabeth Haddon-Care design of a dog and Chinese symbols depicting the Year of the Dog along with the legend HONG KONG $1000. The obverse has the Arnold Machin portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, right-facing and crowned. The legend reads QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND 1982. There was also a gold proof coin struck in the same year.

The Chinese zodiac portrays the symbol of a dog for every twelfth year such as 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994 and 2006. It is said that if you were born under the dog sign that your character would include honesty, sincerity, cautiousness along with being kind and loyal. Lucky colours would be green, red and purple with a rose being their lucky flower.
