The Chinese calendar runs in a 12 year cycle. There are 12 animals representing each of them. The Chinese Year of the Horse combines with the element of water in 1978 and to commemorate this the Royal Mint issued this one thousand dollar gold coin edition. The Chinese Zodiac is composed of 12 animals arranged in order from the rat through to the pig. The order was established by a race between the animals, thousands of years ago orchestrated by the Jade Emperor of China. The 12-year sequence features coin releases marking the Year of the Rat, Year of the Mouse, Year of the Ox, Year of the Tiger, Year of the Rabbit, Year of the Dragon, Year of the Snake, Year of the Horse, Year of the Goat, Year of the Monkey, Year of the Rooster, Year of the Dog and Year of the Pig.

The 1978 Chinese Year of the Horse began on the 10th February but the real Chinese year is 4676. It is normally the darkest day of the month that the Chinese year will start and Chinese people celebrate up until the brightest day of the month around two weeks later. This particular horse year is fused with the element water and will only do so every 60 years. The 1978 Year of the Horse is the 7th year of the Chinese zodiac.

The reverse was designed by Leslie Durbin and shows a beautiful Chinese horse along with the legend HONG KONG $1000. The obverse features an Arnold Machin effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II along with the legend QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND 1977. The Year of the Horse characteristics are that they are active, energetic, kind, rational, optimistic, straightforward and sentimental. Their best match would be a goat or a tiger. They are lucky with green, yellow and the numbers 2,3 and 7.
