The 1977 Pattern One Dollar was created as a test piece by the Royal Australian Mint. The heptagonal design was never issued on any Australian coins with the exception of a commemorative piece issued in 2004 as part of a series of pattern re-strikes. The design was rejected due to manufacturing complexities which would have made mass production impractical. (Royal Australian Mint, 2004)

The reverse of the pattern was designed by Christopher Ironside and features a the depiction of a heraldic lion with the legend "TESTING R. AUST. MINT". The obverse features the Arnold Machin effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the legend "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1977".
