The 1977 Pattern One Dollar was created as a test piece by the Royal Australian
Mint. The heptagonal design was never issued on any Australian coins with the exception of a commemorative piece
issued in 2004 as part of a series of pattern re-strikes. The design was rejected due to manufacturing complexities which
would have made mass production impractical.

The reverse of the pattern was designed by Christopher Ironside and
features a the depiction of a heraldic lion with the
legend
"TESTING R. AUST. MINT". The obverse features the Arnold Machin effigy
of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the
legend
"ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1977".
