This 1966 early pattern piece is exceptionally rare with only one known example currently in private hands. The obverse features the Machin portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II along with the
simple
legend
"ELIZABETH II 1966 AUSTRALIA" while the reverse is plain. It is believed
that this coin was produced as an early prototype for the new Australian
decimal currency.
A single specimen is currently held at the Royal Australian Mint
in Canberra as part of the National Coin Collection. The single privately held specimen was auctioned as part of the Spink
Australia Sale 24 (lot 1163) along with a letter of authenticity.
