On the first of April 1867 the Straits Settlements became a Crown Colony but it wasn't until 1871 that her first coins
were struck with the one cent being first issued in 1872. The first one cent was struck at the R. Heaton and Sons mint in Birmingham as denoted by a small H mintmark beneath the bust
on the obverse.The reverse design features a partitioned
ring design with 1 in the inner circle with the legend, STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. ONE CENT with
the date following. The obverse features the young head portrait of Queen Victoria as designed
by William Wyon.The one cent was produced in much larger quantities are far more frequently than the lower denominations
due to wider use and as such the issue is available for a majority of dates from 1872 until the end of Queen Victoria's reign
in 1901 which would please most type set collectors. Date set collectors
will experience some difficulty in completing the set, particularly if sought in higher grades with some issues, notably
the 1878 but even the 1885 and 1886, being very difficult to source in premium grades.
