?

The Half Cent series was struck, much like the other copper issues starting in 1872 at the Heaton mint in Birmingham with a large initial mintage of 5.6 million to satisfy the initial demand for smaller circulating currency for the newly founded colony.

The issue features a partitioned circular reverse with the legend STRAITS SETTLEMENTS HALF CENT in the outer edge followed by the date and 1/2 in the middle and an obverse with the effigy of Queen Victoria facing to the left and the legend QUEEN VICTORIA.

The 1872 was issued by the Royal mint only as a proof of record strike. Two particular coins had formed part of the Royal Mint's exhibit at the 1879-80 Sydney International Exhibition being provided to the Sydney Mint by the Royal Mint, London for that purpose  (Museum of Victoria, 2014) .
