The Half Cent series was struck, much like the other copper issues starting in 1872 at the Heaton mint in Birmingham with a large initial mintage of 5.6 million to satisfy the initial demand for smaller circulating currency for the newly founded colony.

The issue features a partitioned circular reverse with the legend STRAITS SETTLEMENTS HALF CENT in the outer edge followed by the date and 1/2 in the middle and an obverse with the effigy of Queen Victoria facing to the left and the legend QUEEN VICTORIA.

The 1889 is no doubt the easiest date in the series to acquire in mint state with a hoard having been well preserved by London dealer Baldwins resulting in numerous fully brilliant red examples surfacing. Nonetheless high demand, particularly from type set collectors who have no other easy choice in the series have kept prices strong for this issue.
