Sales History

?

The Half Cent series was struck, much like the other copper issues starting in 1872 at the Heaton mint in Birmingham with a large initial mintage of 5.6 million to satisfy the initial demand for smaller circulating currency for the newly founded colony.

The issue features a partitioned circular reverse with the legend STRAITS SETTLEMENTS HALF CENT in the outer edge followed by the date and 1/2 in the middle and an obverse with the effigy of Queen Victoria facing to the left and the legend QUEEN VICTORIA.

The 1872 is a relatively common year available right up to mint state but its value dramatically increases once any original mint red is present with very few auction sightings noted. The issue was also struck as a specimen which was released during the Heaton Mint house auction in the 1970s.
