This 1863 Quarter Cent proof is actually bronzed plated copper. (World Coin Price Guide, 1899) There are two types, 1) copper and 2) bronzed plated copper.
Both are scarce and very tough to locate. A beautiful example recently sold as NGC PR65RB fo r $6,462.5 0 from the Eric P Newman foundation. (, 1899)
Because of the unique composition the coin has a wonderful color that alludes to both older styled copper coins and what would come to be the new styled bronze coins.
